Accrington Stanley defender Peter Cavanagh has been suspended from football for eight months for betting on a match involving his club.

The Football Association also fined Cavanagh, 27, £3,500 following an independent hearing.

In July, four other players were banned for betting on a win for Bury in their game against Accrington on 3 May 2008, which Bury won 2-0.

Three of the players were with Stanley at the time and the other at Bury.

Chester's Jay Harris, who was then at Accrington, was banned for a year and fined £5,000.

His then team-mates Robert Williams and David Mannix were banned for eight months and 10 months respectively, and ex-Accrington and Bury player Andrew Mangan, who subsequently joined Forest Green Rovers, was banned for five months.

They were also fined by the FA.

Regarding Cavanagh's involvement, regulatory commission chairman Nicholas Stewart QC said: "These were repeated deliberate breaches of the Football Association's betting rules which are vital to maintain confidence in the integrity of the game.

"These are serious offences by a club captain and therefore must be punished by a substantial period of suspension of eight months together with a fine of £3,500."
